Department of Botany
The Department was established in 1958 under the aided scheme at St. Aloysius College as one of the majors with Chemistry and Zoology subjects. Presently, the subject Botany is offered alongside Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology.
The availability of Botany with applied courses has led to a significant increase in the number of students learning this natural science subject. The course content is designed to meet the academic challenges in both basic and applied aspects of Botany.
The course spans six semesters and provides research-inspired laboratory experience to the students. The curricular papers include basic aspects such as Diversity of lower and higher plant groups, Plant Cytology and Anatomy, Microbiology, and Biosystematics (Angiosperm morphology and Taxonomy). It also covers modern aspects like Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Pharmacognosy.
