About the Department
The Department of Microbiology, established in 1990, with its modern facilities, comprehensive curriculum, and focus on independent learning, prepares students for successful careers in various fields of microbiology. By fostering a supportive and resource-rich environment, the department ensures students are well-equipped to tackle contemporary challenges and contribute to advancements in science and healthcare. The department boasts a well-equipped spacious laboratory that provides students with individual workstations and microscopes, ensuring hands-on experiences fostering a conducive learning environment. A rich collection of books, magazines, and journals supports in-house studies and research. State-of-the-art instruments and devices facilitate advanced research and learning. Students are encouraged to undertake independent projects, promoting research skills and practical application of their studies. A 30 hours Certificate program is provided from the department which adds additional grounding to basics of microbiology. Consultancy services leverage the department's expertise in various fields of microbiology to address specific needs and challenges faced by clients..

Industrial Visit to CMFRI- Kochi & Munnar from February 23rd to 25th 2024.

The students of Biological Sciences visited CMFRI in Cochin and Spice gardens in Munnar as part of their study tour from February 23 to 25th. A total of 90 students attended the tour.They were accompanied by 4 staff members.

B.Sc. Microbiology
The department has been offering the B.Sc. Microbiology programme, since its inception in 1990, with combinations in Chemistry/Zoology/Botany/Food Science. The curriculum spans six semesters, covering General Microbiology, Microbial Biochemistry and Physiology, Microbial Diversity, Microbial Enzymology and Metabolism, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Food Microbiology, Immunology and Medical Microbiology, and Industrial Microbiology. A significant emphasis is placed on hands-on laboratory experience, interdisciplinary learning, and the development of practical and analytical skills. The programme equips students for diverse applications in medicine, industry, environmental sciences, food technology, and research, fostering both academic competence and professional readiness.
B.Sc. Microbiology - Eligibility
• A candidate who has passed the two years +2 level (Karnataka PUC/ISC/CBSE/State Boards/IB) from any recognised board in India.
• A candidate opting for microbiology should specifically have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at the qualifying examinations.

• Lab Technician/Microbiologist: Analyse samples in hospitals or diagnostic centres to detect infections and support patient care.​
• Quality Control/Quality Assurance Analyst: Test products for microbial contamination in the pharmaceutical or food industries.​
