Overview
About the Department
The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments established in 1882. The department offers Economics in BA, B.Sc, B.Com, and BBA streams. It is recognized under the UGC Scheme of College with Potential for Excellence.
The department facilitates students to understand public debate about economic policy, including taxation and government expenditure, trade and globalization, health and welfare. Students are also trained and deputed to participate in various inter-collegiate events related to economics. The department organizes yearly workshops and seminars on current topics in economics.
New Initiations
- Designed and started M.A. in Applied Economics from the Academic Year 2008–2009. At present, the department offers M.A. in Business Economics.
- Started interdisciplinary B.Sc. Programme with Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics from the Academic Year 2016–2017.

BA Economics
The B.A. degree offers a broad-based education in the humanities, social sciences, and languages, with options to specialize in fields like history, political science, or psychology. The program fosters critical thinking, analytical skills, and cultural awareness, making it ideal for careers in education, social work, media, and public services.
BA Economics - Eligibility
A Candidate for the BA Degree Course shall have passed the Pre-University Examination with any combination of subjects or equivalent 12th standard examination of any recognised Board.
Languages Selection (UG Courses only)
The candidates have to study two languages in their degree programme. English Language is offered as the compulsory first language for all the degree programmes. The candidates have to choose any one of the following Second languages as specified:

3. Additional English

5. Malayalam
