DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1882 as a unit of the School Department along with other branches, initially affiliated to Madras University. It was declared as an independent department in the year 1926.

It aims at educating students on various frontiers of theoretical and applied chemistry and facilitates them to pursue higher education and research.

Furthermore, national seminars and talks by distinguished personalities from different institutions are organized regularly for the students along with industrial visits, workshops, certificate courses, and competitions throughout the year.

National and international conferences are also conducted where students and researchers from other institutions present their research findings and engage in exchanging ideas.

The department conducts sessions for interested students on the IIT-JAM examination. With an excellent team of highly qualified and motivated faculty, the department has enabled students to excel in academics and overall performance.

The Department of Chemistry also takes pride in organizing Chemistry competitions every year for pre-university students from various PU colleges, where students engage themselves in a day-long competition.

The Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Chemistry was established in 2007. Later in 2012, another program M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry was started.

The department offers a research program leading to a Ph.D. in Chemistry, which includes areas such as Adsorption Studies, Catalysis, Photodegradation, Nanocomposites, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Corrosion Studies, and Isolation of Natural Products.

Six certificate programs are also available through the department, facilitating further education that advances students' overall growth.

The department also provides live training classes for staff and students of our college in preparing for competitive examinations like NET/KSET/GATE.

The department offers a subject association, Alchemy. The association organizes a National Level Intercollegiate Chemistry Fest ‘Analyst’ to promote Chemistry in higher studies and research.

Reputed companies such as Apotex India Ltd, Syngene International, Biocon, Sequent Scientific, BASF India Pvt. Ltd., Cipla, AstraZeneca, AkzoNobel regularly visit the department for campus placements.
