Biochemistry - St Aloysius (Deemed To Be University)

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

Established in 2002, the Department of Biochemistry offers Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. programs, providing a strong academic foundation in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. The M.Sc. programs are housed in the LCRI Block, while the B.Sc. program operates within the Xavier Block of the Science and Research Centre. Designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of Biochemistry and its evolving applications, the curriculum fosters critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and ethical values, ensuring high academic standards comparable to leading higher education institutions.

The Department is supported by the DBT BUILDER Level-1 Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Meanwhile, the undergraduate program is recognized under the Star College Scheme, integrating Chemistry and Biology to enhance students’ interdisciplinary knowledge and employability. Following the NEP scheme, the Department follows a semester-based system with a strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory training.

The Department is well-equipped with advanced instrumentation, including LC-MS, Ultracentrifuge, UV spectroscopy, a refrigerated centrifuge, Ultrasonicator, electrophoresis units, and PCR equipment. With spacious laboratories, dedicated project rooms, and a well-stocked departmental library with excellent internet access, it provides a robust environment for both teaching and research.

Committed to the holistic development of students and faculty, the department organizes workshops, seminars, summer school programs, and training sessions. It has consistently maintained high academic performance and offers research opportunities for both faculty and undergraduate students. Additionally, the department provides certificate courses, consultancy services, and international exposure through its MoU with Prince of Songkla University, Thailand. Through student projects, field trips, and experiential learning, the Department of Biochemistry ensures a dynamic and enriching educational experience.
