DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
The framework for the postgraduate program in Biochemistry is intended to provide an academic base that caters to the need of the students to gain comprehensive understanding of Biochemistry and its ever-evolving nature of applications. The curriculum design is aimed at attaining snd maintaining standard of achievement with respect to knowledge, skills and the technical know- how to apply the knowledge gained to progress discovery, invention and application in the field. The curriculum also aims at fostering scientific attitudes such as rational reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving and values such as ethics, social and environmental concern. The curriculum finally aims at excellence on par with the standard Higher Education Institutions.
About Department
The Department of Biochemistry, established in 2002, is located in the Xavier Block within the Science and Research Centre. Recognized under the Star College Scheme, the department aims to provide students with an interdisciplinary approach by combining Chemistry and Biology, enhancing their employability. The department is equipped with advanced instruments such as UV spectroscopy, refrigerated centrifuge, a distillation unit, electrophoresis unit, PCR equipment, etc. The syllabus is regularly updated to follow the NEP scheme, operating on a semester system with a strong emphasis on practical laboratory skills.
The department features a spacious lab, comprehensive instrumentation facilities, project rooms, and a well-stocked departmental library with excellent internet access. It is dedicated to both staff and student development, offering programs such as workshops, seminars, summer school programs, and training sessions. The department is known for its consistently good results and provides facilities for research for both staff and undergraduate students.
In addition to academic programs, the department offers certificate courses and consultancy services. It has a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, fostering international collaboration. Through a range of student projects, field trips, and other hands-on learning opportunities, the Department of Biochemistry ensures a robust and dynamic educational experience.
