School of Engineering at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) launches SDG & Gavel Clubs

The School of Engineering, St Aloysius Deemed University, inaugurated its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Club and Gavel Club in a ceremony attended by distinguished dignitaries, faculty, and students.

The event was presided over by Rev. Dr Pravin Martis SJ, Vice Chancellor of St Aloysius Deemed University and President of the ceremony. In his address, he emphasized the Jesuit motto, “Men and Women with and for Others” and urged engineering graduates to develop not only technical expertise but also a compassionate heart for society. Highlighting the pressing challenge of waste management in Mangalore, he called upon students to devise innovative solutions. “While Mangalore is today rated as the safest city in the country, we must also work towards making it the cleanest,” he remarked.

Mr Anand Mathew, Head of Engineering at Checkpoint, Bengaluru, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He spoke on the importance of early participation in student clubs during engineering, noting that such experiences equip graduates with essential skill sets for their professional journey. Stressing the role of innovation for societal benefit, he remarked, “Communication is the key. Engineers should master the art of storytelling, which in turn enables story-selling.”

Dr Geetha Pinto, Coordinator of the SDG Club, outlined the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and inspired students to actively contribute towards these global objectives. “Each student has the potential to make a difference—what matters is participation and commitment,” she said. Ms Ashwija A, Coordinator of the Gavel Club, highlighted the club’s mission to enhance communication and leadership skills among students, noting its potential to bring about personal and professional transformation.

The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the SDG and Gavel Club logos by Rev. Dr Pravin Martis SJ, marking the official launch of the clubs. Mr Glenson Toney, faculty at SOE, welcomed the gathering and set the context for the clubs’ establishment. Dr S. Ruban, Dean of SOE, encouraged students to pursue excellence and innovation while extending his gratitude to the dignitaries.
