Department of Physics

The Department of UG Physics was established in the year 1926. The Physics department has a long history of nearly 100 years of its existence. It has catered to the needs of many students who have had high ambitions to pursue their studies in physical science over the last 98 fruitful years.

The Physics department has taken the lead in many ways to meet the needs of not only students but also teachers and research students from Mangalore University and other universities. The department has organized many workshops and seminars (both national and international level) and has provided various platforms to motivate young science students and teachers to engage in higher studies and research in basic science.

Many reputed and dedicated professors who have served the Physics department are responsible for establishing its strong foundation. At present, the Physics department fulfills the desires of students (both girls and boys) in pursuing their B.Sc degree in accordance with the syllabus framed by St. Aloysius Deemed to be University, Mangaluru, which is in line with NEP 2020 guidelines.

The Physics department offers a three-year B.Sc degree program with Physics as one of the major subjects. The program is designed to nurture students with a scientific approach and critical thinking, while also developing self-confidence to pursue higher studies in physics leading to research areas. We expect all-round development of students by involving them actively in classroom lectures, practical sessions, seminars, quiz programs, assignments, PowerPoint presentations, model-making competitions, internships, projects, and science fests.

The Physics department is also involved in training students for competitive examinations like JAM and GATE.

Industrial Visit to Canara Springs Mangalore

As a part of Association activity, The PG Department of Physics made a visit to Canara Springs on 24 th January 2024. The Canara Workshops Ltd. is one of the leading experts in suspensions and pioneers in leaf springs.

The company is the first of its kind to start indigenous laminated leaf spring manufacturing in India and also among the first to introduce advanced technologies to improve the performance of leaf springs. They manufacture leaf springs for heavy commercial vehicles, light commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and also for passenger cars.

Overall, the students had gained insights into the manufacturing process, material selection, quality control, and engineering principles involved. They witnessed  the use of machinery, automation, and specialized techniques employed in leaf spring manufacturing.
