DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

The Department of History is one of the oldest departments of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University). Established in 1866, the Department holds the distinction of having had Fr. Angelo Maffei, one of the first Jesuit educators in Mangalore and the author of Konkani grammar and dictionary, and Fr. Moore SJ, the author of the ‘History of the Diocese of Mangalore’, as professors. In the 1970s and 80s, veteran teachers such as Prof. I. Rebello, Prof. VR Hebbar, Fr Lawrence Castelino SJ, and Prof. Gilbert Sequiera trained hundreds of students in the Department.

Through a comparative study of historical and modern societies and cultures, the department seeks to encourage students to appreciate the complexity and range of the human experience. We strive to enhance students' capacity to conduct research, evaluate, and analyze the data, leading to their overall development. The department works to support students in gaining the knowledge and abilities necessary to become knowledgeable, involved, and considerate citizens.

The Department's goals are to foster intellectual brilliance and offer a welcoming environment conducive to productive discussion. The department's goal is to increase students' understanding of local, state, national, and international history. The Department strives to provide students with a unique educational experience and to improve and facilitate their grasp of complex social phenomena in order to help them live more conscious and responsible lives as citizens.

The Department boasts highly trained, proficient, and committed faculty members who consistently strive to improve teaching standards in a rapidly evolving environment. The Faculty members are highly esteemed scholars who have made significant contributions to the field of history and are experts in their specific areas of study. This is demonstrated by the substantial amount of requests for special talks at conferences and participation in national and international conferences and workshops that have been received from across the globe.
