On Thursday, September 15, 2022, St. Aloysius College's Department of BBA and B Voc, in collaboration with the Save Soil team Mangaluru, organized a 'Save Soil' awareness programme. The event featured Cyclist Sahil Jha as the resource person, who has traveled over 2,500 kilometers from Kolkata to raise awareness about saving soil and addressing the hunger crisis.
During the event, Sahil Jha highlighted the alarming statistic that over 300,000 farmers have committed suicide due to declining soil fertility and low income. He warned that continued use of pesticides, excessive digging, and fertilizers could lead to desertification, potentially causing a 40% decline in food production.
Jha emphasized the potential for civil unrest as food shortages worsen, urging the government to introduce policies that provide incentives to farmers. He also called on the public to recognize the importance of soil conservation, stressing that collective action could push the government to implement soil conservation policies.
The event was attended by Dean BBA Arathi Shanbag, HOD BBA Claret Pereira, and Dean B Voc Chethan Shettigar. Assistant Professor BBA Ayush Kottari served as the event's compere.
