Department of Kannada
The Department of Kannada at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore has a long history of 134 years. The department was established in 1880 and Kannada Major was started in the year 1986-87.
Many eminent scholars such as Panje Mangesha Raya, Vidwan Muliya Thimmappayya, Tekkunje Gopalakrishna Bhat, Shankara Bhat, B.V. Kedilaya, K.V. Padakannaya, U. Narayana Sharma, Rev. Fr. Prashanth V. Madtha, N. Damodara Shetty have served in the department.
Apart from the regular academic activities Kannada Department also promotes extracurricular interests among students by engaging them in literary and cultural activities. There is regular revision of syllabus. The Department holds fortnightly literary discussions under the banner of “Manthana” and organizes an annual literary awareness programme called ‘Chinthana’.
The Department also conducts various seminars, workshops and literary competitions for students within and also at the inter-college level periodically. Apart from teaching language to B.A, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA and BCA it also offers Kannada as major subject at B.A. Degree level.
