Overview
About the Department
The Department of Kannada at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore has a long history of 134 years. The department was established in 1880 and Kannada Major was started in the year 1986–87.
Many eminent scholars such as Panje Mangesha Raya, Vidwan Muliya Thimmappayya, Tekkunje Gopalakrishna Bhat, Shankara Bhat, B.V. Kedilaya, K.V. Padakannaya, U. Narayana Sharma, Rev. Fr. Prashanth V. Madtha, and N. Damodara Shetty have served in the department.
Apart from regular academic activities, the Kannada Department promotes extracurricular interests through literary and cultural engagement. Fortnightly literary discussions are held under the banner “Manthana” and an annual literary awareness programme titled “Chinthana” is organized.
The Department also conducts seminars, workshops, and literary competitions at intra- and inter-collegiate levels. Apart from teaching Kannada to B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA, and BCA programmes, it also offers Kannada as a Major subject at the B.A. degree level.
