About the Department

St. Aloysius College is the first ever college to introduce Computer Animation subjects at the undergraduate level at Mangalore University. The Department of Computer Animation was established in 2009 as a subdivision of the Department of Computer Science and Applications, with the objective of providing technical education to B.Sc. students in animation and related digital media fields.

The department features a well-equipped computer laboratory and is supported by dedicated and experienced faculty members. The programme is spread across six semesters and is designed to help students build successful careers in animation, visual effects, and digital media. Teaching is carried out using ICT-enabled classrooms with due importance given to both theory and practical training.

The curriculum provides strong foundations in animation principles, design, storytelling, computer graphics, and digital media production, along with exposure to industry-relevant tools, software, and production workflows essential for modern animation careers.

Beyond classroom teaching, the department emphasizes experiential learning through live online demonstrations, video-based tutorials, animation project development, portfolio building, and creative assignments such as cartoon drawing, flipbook animation, motion studies, and short film creation.

To enhance academic exposure, the department organizes seminars, expert talks, workshops, film screenings, conferences, and software-oriented training programmes on animation, VFX, gaming, and emerging digital media technologies, with resource persons from industry and academia.

South Asian Ambassador for Wikipedia

Mr Santhosh Notagar, HOD & Assistant Professor of department of Computer Animation, School of Information Science & Technology was honoured as the chief guest for Fornix, an event celebrating International Animation Day at Yenepoya Deemed to be University, Mangaluru, on October 28, 2024. During his speech, he highlighted the rapid growth and transformative potential of the animation industry, emphasizing how government initiatives, particularly the AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics) policies, are playing a crucial role in fostering this sector's development. He outlined some of the industry's challenges, such as the integration of AI technologies and the adaptability required from professionals in the field. Following his inspiring address, he officially inaugurated an art exhibition showcasing vibrant artworks and an impressive array of fashion designs, celebrating the creative synergy between traditional artistry and modern digital techniques

Mr Santhosh Notagar, Head & Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Animation and the President of Wikipedia Association has been selected as the South Asian Ambassador for Wikipedia Asian Month activities by the Wikimedia Foundation, (WMF) USA. In this prestigious role, he is spearheading initiatives across multiple languages, promoting engagement and contributions to Wikipedia from South Asian countries.
