We, the Class X of 1983 of St Aloysius High School, are pleased and honoured to institute The Class X of 1983 Scholarship Endowment at our alma mater, St Aloysius, beginning with the academic year 2025–26.
This initiative is our heartfelt tribute to the institution that shaped us and continues to inspire us. The idea first took root when we reconnected online in June 2024, four decades after we dispersed in 1983. We were able to trace and bring together over seventy classmates from around the world, many of whom had lost touch completely. It was a rediscovery of old bonds and a revival of a spirit that had quietly endured the passage of time.
As conversations deepened, a common thought emerged: to channel our renewed connection into something purposeful. Months of reflection, planning, and coordination with the institution culminated in the creation of The Class X of 1983 Scholarship Endowment in April 2025, with an initial corpus of INR 61 lakh. This is our modest yet sincere effort to make a meaningful difference – within our city, our school, and in the lives of deserving students at St Aloysius.
As Leonard Cohen so poignantly said in his song, Everybody Knows, “Everybody knows the fight was fixed, the poor stay poor, the rich get rich….”
While the world may not be ideal, we believe that even a small act of support can tip the scales ever so slightly towards hope and possibility.
The Class X of 1983 Scholarship Endowment is designed as a long-term, sustainable initiative to support economically disadvantaged yet deserving students. It will award scholarships to three students in the first year, with the number increasing incrementally each year to cover a total of nine students by the third year – three each from Class X to II PUC.
We chose these years as they mark a critical phase in a student’s academic journey, often determining access to higher studies and future opportunities. By easing financial barriers at this juncture, the scholarship aims to nurture both aspiration and achievement.
The endowment corpus is invested in risk-calibrated market instruments. Only the earnings will be used for scholarships, allowing the corpus to remain self-sustaining. As the corpus grows with future contributions, the number of beneficiaries will also expand. This is the first ever class-driven initiative of its kind at St Aloysius, both in vision and structure.
Our alma mater’s motto, Lucet et ardet – Shine to enkindle – embodies the values we hold dear. Through this initiative, we seek to carry that light forward, enabling young minds to shine in their own right and, in turn, to enkindle change in their families and communities.
We were fortunate to be educated in an institution shaped by Jesuit values: social justice, inclusiveness, and dignity for all. We experienced these values not only in what was taught but also in how the institution functioned. The anonymous mid-day meal scheme for underprivileged students, admission policies that welcomed marginalised and first-generation learners, and an environment of unconditional acceptance left an indelible impact on us.
St Aloysius, with its noble 145-year legacy, has always inspired us to aim high and reach far. We still recall the excitement of witnessing the grand centenary celebrations in 1980, graced by the then President of India. It is this enduring spirit we now honour and seek to pass on through the scholarship endowment.
This scholarship is dedicated to our alma mater, to the many teachers who shaped our minds and character, to the friendships and camaraderie of our youth, and – most touchingly – with heartfelt remembrance, to the memory of our dear classmates who are no longer with us. Their presence in our lives remains a cherished part of our journey.
The Class X of 1983 Endowment also serves as a replicable model that may inspire other batches and alumni groups – not only at our school, but across educational institutions. We warmly invite all who resonate with our ideals – whether fellow Aloysians or simply well- wishers who believe in this cause – to join us.
The endowment is governed by transparent guidelines. Contributors will receive annual reports from the Institutional Development Office (IDO) of St Aloysius Institutions.
Let us, together, help more students shine and enkindle many more flames of possibility, just as St Aloysius did for us.
