MA (Journalism & Mass Communication)


MA (Journalism & Mass Communication), formerly known as Masters in Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) is a two-year full-time program offered by St. Aloysius College under autonomy system of education.

The MA(JMC) course in Aloysius is a healthy mix of theoretical and practical approach – with both getting equal emphasis. Along with classroom teaching, masters in communication and media studies employs various on-field activities like real-time news reporting, on-field TV news coverage, developing actual advertising campaigns etc.

Students of MA(JMC)course in Aloysius get industry level exposure with industry trained staff and equipment. For specialised expertise, we have a host of professionals belonging to the media industry from various parts of the country providing guest lectures/interaction sessions with students throughout the year.

Eligibility

Candidates who have passed any Bachelors Degree examination of Mangalore University or any other University considered as equivalent thereto are eligible for the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/Category-I Candidates) in aggregate Including Languages and Group III Subjects. Selection of candidates shall be on merit-cum-reservation on the basis of 50:50 weightage for marks in the entrance and qualifying examinations.

  • Help students integrate their learning with adequate practical experience
  • Train youngsters in all streams of media with optimum practical exposure
  • Equip students with the necessary skills and expertise to join the industry easily by developing competence in offering industry standard education.

Our MA (Journalism & Mass Communication) course is designed to offer the best of theoretical and practical knowledge by covering all aspects of the media, besides the specializations.

Through various media related activities spread across two years, students of MA(JMC) course in Aloysius are trained to evolve as consummate media professionals by our faculty, who have the required industry exposure and ties.

The MA (Journalism & Mass Communication) course offers specialization in

1) Broadcast Communication
2) Corporate Communication
3) Print and New Media Journalism

During specialization, students of MA(JMC) course in Aloysius are required to work on their dissertation. In addition, students are also required to undergo six weeks of internships in various media houses, advertising agencies, PR houses, and production houses.

Department of Mass Communication St Aloysius College is equipped with good infrastructure. Students get the required hands-on experience in various technical aspects of media through a television studio with PD cameras and Apple Mac for video editing. For daily broadcast learning experience, students of St Aloysius College mass communication course have a Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM, managed by the Dept of Mass Communication.

Practical Industry Exposure

The Department of Mass Communication St Aloysius College has tie-ups with local television channels in Mangalore where the students in their second year produce content including news bulletins, short features and other programs for weekly telecast on the channel.

In addition, students of MA(JMC) course in Aloysius also provide content for news portals adding depth to their CV. Department, along with the students, organizes various seminars, workshops and film festivals, that endeavours to uplifts quality of education.
