The Department of History was established as early as 1886. Fr Maffei SJ, (the author of the History of the Diocese of Mangalore) and Fr Moore SJ have taught in the Department in the initial years.

In 1970s and 80s, veteran teachers such as Prof. I. Rebello, Prof. VR Hebbar, Fr Lawrence Castelino SJ, Prof. Gilbert Sequiera have trained hundreds of students in the Department.

The department organizes yearly workshops / Seminars on history and current related topics. It also conducts study tours to historical places for the students.
