St Aloysius College organised Sociology Fest, SOCIUS-2022


The department of sociology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru organised a one-day sociology fest titled "SOCIUS - Smashin Stigma" Wednesday, June 22, 2022 in L F Rasquinha Hall of LCRI Block of the College. It was the first ever fest from the sociology department since its inception at St Aloysius College.

Dr Alwyn D'Sa, Registrar & Controller of Examinations, of the College was the Chief Guest. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Principal, presided over the programme.  Ms Joan Rita O’Brien, the Convenor of the programme, Rosa Nimmy Mathew & Ms Anuradha Shetty, the resource persons and Alex Mathew, Sneha Kuriachan, Suha Abdul Gafoor, the student co-ordinators were present on the dais. 

Addressing the gathering Dr Alwyn D'Sa said, "Education and awareness are the biggest tools to smash stigma. This fest will enlighten you on the fact that we are a part of this stigma."

Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ in his presidential remarks said, "Society has to be inclusive. Society does not accept unconventional things but whenever we want to do good things, we should do it in a different manner."
The highlight of the fest was when student Samanah with cleft lip compered the event beautifully and smashed the stigma.

Dean of Arts faculty Dr Roseveera and director of admin block Norbert Lobo were present.

The formal function was followed by sessions on Autism and social stigma, time to get over by it by Dr Rosa Nimmy Mathew, assistant professor and HoD MSc (Counseling) at School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya and session on sexual health – ‘’Let us not shy away, let us speak’’ by Anuradha Shetty, assistant professor and HoD of Rural Development School of Social work, Roshini Nilaya.

Various competitions were held for the participants of the fest such as slam poetry competition, elocution competition and theme dance.

Students Judith, Samanah and Bhavarna compered the sessions, Assistant professor and HoD of sociology department Joan Rita O'Brien welcomed the gathering and assistant professor Savitha D Souza proposed a vote of thanks.

Dr Norbert Lobo, Director of Admin block was the chief guest for the valedictory function.

The winner of slam poetry competition was St Aloysius PU College, Elocution competition Aloysius PU College and Milagres PU College, while theme dance winners were Aloysius PU College and Canara PU College.
During the valedictory, Jane and Bhavarna compered the event, Sneha Kuriachan and Sneha Joshi welcomed and proposed a vote of thanks respectively.
