The Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Mathematics established in the year 2010 offers a two years PG Programme in Mathematics. MSc in Mathematics is specialized in academia and industry. The students who complete MSc Mathematics will get respectable intellectual level seeking to expose scientific research orientation in Mathematics. The curriculum is designed to provide academic competence in the areas of both theoretical and applied Mathematics, enhancing the professional objectives of students.
Special Features of the Department
- Computational Lab courses using Maxima, Scilab to increase the job opportunities in the industrial sector
- Math Fiesta - Intercollegiate Undergraduate Level Competitions are organized every year on behalf of Birth Memorial Celebrations of Prof. K. A. Krishnamurthy who was an eminent professor of Mathematics at St Aloysius College
- Conducting workshops on MatLab and student projects under MoU
- Hands-on training on LaTeX and student project reports are mandatorily prepared using LaTeX
- MJES seed money for selected student projects
- Familiarizing students with inter-disciplinary approach though conferences and interaction with industry personnel
- Conducting seminars, guest lectures through eminent faculty and NET/SLET problem-solving sessions through PhD scholars
- Rural exposure programme - A week long Rural Exposure programme is included as a part of curriculum in the III Semester. It is compulsory for all students pursuing PG Courses in St. Aloysius College

- Student Faculty Programme: To enhance the teaching skills the students are given an opportunity to take classes for the Undergraduate students

Duration of the Programme
The duration of MSc in Mathematics shall be 4 semesters (2 years). Each semester comprises of eighteen weeks duration, including continuous evaluation and internal examinations. The programme also includes Computational Lab courses.
Course Content:
The MSc Mathematics Programme shall comprise “Core” and “Open Elective” Courses. The “Core” courses shall further consist of “Hard core” and “Soft core” courses. Hard core courses shall have 5 credits and the soft core courses shall have 4 credits. Also, to have better flexibility in introducing the courses, additional optional courses are offered under ‘Soft Core’ category. Open electives shall have 3 credits.
Total credit for the programme shall be 92 including open electives. Out of the total 92 credits of the programme, the hard core shall make up 58.69% of the total credits; soft core is 34.78% while the open electives will have a fixed 6 credits.
