Objectives:
To provide knowledge and skill in psychological counseling
To develop an integrated personality required to function as a counselor
To provide ample training through necessary practical exposure to different areas in counseling
Scope of the Course:
To prepare students to become skilled counselors with in-depth theoretical knowledge of different aspects of counseling and comprehensive practical exposure
Criteria for Admission:
Candidates who have passed any Bachelor degree examination with Psychology as one of the subjects or B.S.W. Degree examination of Mangalore University or any other University considered as equivalent thereto or graduates with P.G. Diploma/Diploma in Counselling or graduates with at least 2 years of work experience as Counsellor are eligible for the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category-I candidates) in aggregate Including Languages and Group III Subjects.
Course Intake:
The maximum number of students to be admitted to the course is 40 each year.

Syllabus with Scheme of Teaching

The course will be conducted in accordance with the semester system.
-
Each semester will be of 20 weeks duration inclusive of examinations.
-
All examinations including practical/project/viva will conclude by the end of the 20th week.

A candidate should secure an overall minimum of 50% marks in each paper including both internal assessment and end semester examination.
-
A minimum of 40% is required in order to pass in each paper of the end semester examination.
-
75% attendance is the minimum requirement for appearing in semester examinations.
Pattern of Theory Question Papers:
The question paper is divided into three parts:
I. Six questions (out of seven) carrying 2 marks each. (6×2=12)
II. Four questions (out of six) carrying 8 marks each. (4×8=32)
III. Four questions (out of six) carrying 14 marks each (4×14=56)
Project Work (Semester IV)

Internship of 250 hours duration (125 client hours)

Maintain a journal of counselling practice which should be signed by the external and internal supervisors regularly;

There shall be weekly supervision individually and in groups; verbatims have to be presented in both instances;

Submit two case studies of counselling that were terminated after a minimum of five sessions with the clients;

Submit a video tape and transcript of a counselling session;

Prepare a project for five days’ duration addressing an issue of the target population at the placement; present a session to the target group for at least two days with part of the prepared programme and submit the feedback.
Thesis: This should demonstrate the ability to use research methods and statistics in the study of counselling issues.

The evaluation system of the course is based on two components:

Continuous evaluation

End semester examination
Continuous evaluation:
Based on this, internal assessment marks are allotted. It includes the following criteria:

25% marks for two internal assessment examinations of 2 hours duration each carrying 50 marks in each semester. Total marks secured are reduced to 25.

Three marks are given for class participation.

Twelve marks are allotted for surprise tests/quiz/seminar.

Ten marks for writing assignments and reviews.
-
In the practical of the first and second semester, one model examination is conducted for awarding fifteen marks and ten marks for the continuous assessment during practical sessions.

In the practical of the third and fourth semester, one model examination is conducted for awarding thirty marks and twenty marks are awarded for continuous assessment during practical sessions.
End Semester Examination:

Each end semester examination is conducted for 100 marks, which will then be reduced to 50 marks. Questions in the End semester examination will assess the conceptual, comprehensive and analytical abilities of the students.

In the first, second and third semesters, end semester practical examination is conducted for 50 marks. (50 marks are for internal examinations).

In the fourth semester, end semester practical exam is conducted for 50 marks. (40 marks are for practical proper and 10 marks for the viva).
