The Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in English, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) was established in the academic year 2008 -09. The department has experienced and competent staff and the key thrust area of the department is research. Keeping in mind the changing trends, the department offers papers on the Literatures of Britain, America, Asia, Africa and America, Cultural Studies, Language, Literary Theory and Criticism. It trains its students for teaching, research and the industry. As the focus area of the department is on research, it organises seminars, encourages research projects, paper presentations, and paper publications by students and faculty.

Opportunities available for the students of English are numerous. 
1. To take up competitive examinations
2. Public Relations and HRD officers need to have effective communication skills and mastery in Spoken English and students of English Literature and Communication will be preferred.
3. Advertising and Journalism fields extensively employ M.A. English students.
4. Publishing Houses need candidates proficient in English.
5. Teaching at various levels (Universities, Colleges, Pre-university Colleges, Medical colleges, Engineering colleges and Para-medical colleges)
6. Various IT companies require Postgraduates in English to work as instructional designers, content writers, language editors and so on. 

Course
The entire course shall consist of FOUR semesters with 18 weeks per semester. The total credits for the entire course is 92 credits. All the hard core papers are for 5 credits each, all soft core papers are for 4 credits. All the hard core papers are mandatory while the students will have an option for their soft core papers and open electives as per the regulations of Mangalore University and the college.

Evaluation system
Continuous Internal Assessment : 30 marks
End semester exams: 70 marks

Academic and Research

  • One of the special skills that the department offers lies is in the tie-up with St Aloysius High School. The second year students undergo a mandatory teaching practice with these students. 
  • The department has MoU with other colleges for faculty and student exchange programme and both staff and students have regular interaction on academics.
  • The students have to mandatorily present or publish at least one research paper at conferences by the time is course is over. The department helps the students in this initiative.
  • The department also organises an annual study tour.
  • It conducts an annual national seminar/workshop.
  • It has a departmental Library with more than 500 books.
  • Guest Lectures on areas other than English Literature are organised.
