The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1977, when it was introduced as a Minor subject under humanities to the B.A degree students. Now it is offered as a major or core subject for the B.A degree course.

The department is in constant touch with Indian sociological society as well as Mangalore University sociology teachers association. Hence, every year it conducts national seminars and workshops for teachers and students.

The department maintains a departmental library. Besides guest talks on burning issues are held regularly. The department also conducts study tours every year. The department also plans for developing the department as centre for women studies.
