Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1882 as a unit of the School Department along with other branches, initially affiliated to Madras University. It was declared as an independent department in the year 1926.

Since its inception the department has pioneered in providing quality education with high standard of excellence. It aims at educating students on various frontiers of theoretical and applied chemistry and facilitates them to pursue higher education and research.

Dept of Chemistry offers B.Sc. Chemistry programmes for 6 semesters (3 years) involving theory, practicals and choice-based credit system (CBCS). Final year students are given an opportunity to work on minor projects. To evaluate students’ academic progress and overall development, continuous assessment is made.

Furthermore, national seminars and talks by distinguished personalities from different Institutions are organized regularly to the students along with industrial visits, workshops, certificate courses and competitions (poster, lab activities, science models) throughout the year. National and international conferences are also conducted where students and researchers from other institutions present their research findings and engage in exchanging ideas. Students who are interested to engage in Chemistry related co-curricular activities are encouraged to join Chemalgam, a subject association of Chemistry.

Dept of Chemistry also takes pride in organizing Chemistry competitions every year for pre-university students from various PU colleges, where students engage themselves in a day-long competition. Currently, the department is conducting a yearlong online sessions for interested students on IIT-JAM examination. With an excellent team of highly qualified and motivated faculty, the department has enabled to excel in academics and overall performance.
